“We are committed to serving the community, to upholding the
values of Islam and providing hope and knowledge to those
who seek it.”
ABOUT THE MASJID
During the late 1800's and the early part of the 20th century, immigrants from the Indian Subcontinent came to the Cape and settled in the lower part of District 6 at the foot of Table Mountain. In 1905, the Founding Fathers took charge of leading the religious affairs of the growing community from number 3 Muir Street (the home of Adam Ebrahim).
At 3 Muir Street, the first Salah Khana in the area was established in 1906. By 1922, the community had grown considerably, and a row of houses was purchased in Chapel Street with the aim of establishing a place of prayer in the area. By the 4th of March 1923, the building of the mosque was completed on the corner of Chapel and Muir Streets. Years later, in 1936, the Kanamia Moslim League, under the chair of Ahmad Ismail (Piccadilly) launched an ambitious fundraising campaign to rebuild. By 1938, the new three-story building replaced the original Masjid.
